Density

Summary of the usage of density in Terminal Management TMX and associated software.

Overview

Density is an important property of Bulk Products in Terminal Management TMX. Density is used to convert from a product's measured weight to a volume. Accurate measure of density is important as even small errors can lead to issues with a Bulk Product over- or under-delivering, in addition to inventory errors, or trouble with fill limits.

How Density Is Used

Density is used when orders are made in a unit of volume such as gallons or cubic feet. It also makes the system volume aware which is important so that fill limits can be respected on mixers, weigh-tanks, and transports. Being aware of products with vastly different densities can prevent overfilling, spilling, or control circuit interrupts.

If accurate densities cannot be found, running a system exclusively on weight units is recommended.

Density and Fill Limits

Fill limits can be configured in both weight and volume units. When fill limits are in use, accurate densities are necessary for the system to correctly evaluate whether a fill limit will be reached. See Fill Limits for more information.

Missing densities (densities set to zero) may result loadout software reporting errors such as "Could not convert Pounds to Gallons". Densities should be entered or the order updated to use only weight units.

This assumes the use of meters or scales calibrated to a weight unit. If using pulse meters, which are calibrated to a volume unit, volume units should be used to run the system.
